Turning surge in mobile data into profits

Subscribers’ hunger for advanced data services and mobility has created a great opportunity to mobile operators: after being squeezed by stagnation in penetration growth, price competition and tightening regulation operators now enjoy an influx of new mobile data subscribers. The only challenge is to turn this influx into profits.

Mobile data operators suffer from a serious mismatch between capacity usage and revenues. In particular, advanced data service account for the majority of traffic and investments but generate only minority of revenues. In consequence, to reap the benefits of mobile data, operators need to tackle two tasks: 1. How to make data users pay for the capacity they use; and 2. How to optimise investments required in the networks.
